Water stress causes deterioration of fresh water resources in terms of quantity and quality and consequently poses threats to
the overall societal prosperity. Water stress occurs when the demand for water exceeds the available resources or when poor
quality restricts the water use. Water scarcity as well as the growing demand for good quality water in the Salt Lake County
(SLC), Utah is of great concern to policy-makers. Efficient strategies to accommodate the available but limited quantity of
water to a diverse group of water users in the SLC are needed immediately. Therefore an assessment of the available water
resources, existing water use distributions and practices, and the future water stress present a challenging research topic.
Growing population and land transformation plays crucial roles on shaping water management and on formulating efficient
strategies for water utilization. In this work, land use transformation and population growth models will be used to predict
the water demand in different water use segments. We take the advantage of the past, present, and the estimated future water
demands to quantify the gap between the water supply and demand. The analyses presented here could be used to develop
scenarios to reduce the water stress in a manner that could ultimately reduce the societal vulnerability to a water shortage
in scenarios such a drought. The results of this study are valuable to decision-makers as they present new means of efficient
management of scarce water resources.
