Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) modeling has found increasing application in
hydrology. In this paper, we present a general LB modeling approach
for multiphase-multicomponent porous medium systems. Further, we
present two examples in which we use LB modeling to better understand
macroscale behavior of such systems. In the first example, we
investigate the formation of traveling bands of chemotactic bacteria
and its potential application to the remediation of contaminated
groundwater. In the second example, we demonstrate how LB modeling
can be used to derive mass-transfer correlations for the dissolution
of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs).
