Ground water is not only a vital water resource but also a dynamic variable that may play an important role in the global
water cycle and climate system. There has been an abundant of groundwater research and analyses at borehole, field, to local
scales, but few at regional to large scales in which interactions between surface and groundwater and their impacts on water
and energy budgets are explicitly investigated in a land-atmosphere coupling system. In this talk, a dynamic representation
of groundwater table movement for unsteady state conditions and how the consideration of groundwater table fluctuations
affecting water and energy budgets will be presented at watershed scales. Then, initial assessments of the role of surface
and groundwater interactions on water and energy budgets at large spatial scales will be discussed through a series of
sensitivity analyses based on the MM5-VIC land-atmosphere coupling system.
