Salvucci [2001, WRR] presented a methodology for estimating the moisture dependence of root zone water loss (drainage plus
evapotranspiration) based on conditionally averaging the water balance equation according to soil moisture state (S). In
that work, it was shown that the conditional average of the transient storage term, E[ dS/dt | S], vanishes for stationary
systems, leaving a balance of conditionally averaged precipitation, E[P | S], and conditionally averaged water loss terms.
The methodology has been used to estimate both the point and area-scaled dependence of water loss terms on moisture from
more readily available measurements of precipitation and moisture. Here we extend this method to groundwater systems by
conditional averaging the Dupuit equation according to water table depth. In this case, we show that the dependence of
recharge (net of percolation and capillary rise) on water table depth can be inferred from conditional averaging of the
divergence of water table heights. Applications of this approach to problems of estimation, model specification, and
scale-dependence will be presented.
