This paper reviews existing knowledge of stream and river budgets and water column and hyporheic temperatures, with special
reference to European watercourses. Results from detailed field monitoring of the major heat budget components are presented
for a number contrasting streams and rivers, including forested and open channels and groundwater and surface water reaches
in Britain, and especially in the South-West of England. These highlight significant spatial variation in the nature of the
energy budget and emphasise the considerable variability in the magnitude and relative importance of heat flux components
over daily to seasonal timescales. The findings of the field studies suggest that while temperature behaviour in the water
column and stream bed can be broadly accounted for through an understanding of energy budgets, more research is needed to
elucidate fully the role of some processes, including advective heat transport associated with surface-subsurface exchanges.
