TI: Estimation of Land Surface Latent Heat Flux and Its Determinants Based on Remotely Sensed

Evaporation from land surfaces links the water, energy and carbon cycles yet there are neither adequate in situ networks nor
established remote sensing-based approaches that allow mapping of the flux. A review of the major roadblocks to estimation
of evaporation fields is presented. Difficulties in establishing robust methods using existing remotely sensed measurements,
principally land surface temperature and vegetation indices, will be included. It is shown that such approaches have
closure requirements and that empirical closure relations are unreliable. Possible ways forward is to use adjoint state
estimation with energy balance constraint. Additionally the capability of future sensing capabilities, principally surface
soil moisture remote sensing, to further constrain the problem is presented. The value of Hydros, the Hydrosphere State
Mission, to the estimation of latent heat flux from land surfaces is outlined.
