For more than 30 years, Information Theory (IT) concepts have appeared in literature and practice of hydrology in several
ways. Although these concepts are implicit in many practical applications and ideas, still the language and use are not
widespread among the scientific community dedicated to study hydrologic processes. At the same time, new points of view, as
the shown in this session, reflect the increasing availability of data and information with finer resolution. Equally,
increasing computing capabilities, the development of more complex decision-making systems, and better forecasting tools
impose on hydrologists new challenges related to the optimal use of data and the information that can be extracted from it.
In our understanding, one of the approaches to address these challenges is to recognize that the notion of information is
inherent to the problem of dealing with hydrologic data and the evaluation of its characteristics. The goal of this poster is
to evaluate how IT can be used to generate a conceptual framework for assessing the performance of models against real data,
and how these assessments can help us to increase our knowledge about the physical mechanisms involved.
