Thirteen monthly GRACE gravity solutions from August 2002 to December 2004 are examined to recover terrestrial water storage
changes, and to investigate likely errors in the estimates. To understand limitations in GRACE results, simulated monthly
GRACE solutions are generated using numerical climate models, GRACE error levels, and the GRACE Atmospheric and Ocean
Dealiasing (AOD) model. The simulated data are compared with real GRACE data and used to estimate possible errors from
measurement noise, leakage associated with a finite range of spherical harmonics, and AOD model error. Two different filters
are used to estimate basin-scale storage changes from spherical harmonics, and each is applied to both real and synthetic
GRACE data. Twelve river basins are selected for detailed estimates of water storage changes. Over those basins, real and
synthetic GRACE data predict similar amplitudes of water storage fluctuations. In addition GRACE errors are estimated over 53
river basins, representing nearly all Earth_s surface except Antarctica and Greenland. Water storage errors are generally
dependent upon basin size, location, and shape
