The proposed CUAHSI environmental observatories provide unprecedented opportunities for developing new process insights and
predictions for terrestrial water distribution and associated biogeochemical processes. Because the proposed observatories
are at a scale considerably larger than the traditional headwater research catchment, new approaches to gauging will be
required. This talk argues that the now-standard bottom-up, reductionist approaches of the past many decades will need to be
replaced by topdown approaches to watershed discretization and diagnosing dominant processes. The observatories may be a
catalyst for changing (and formalizing) the way that we gauge and instrument watersheds for quantifying states, stocks, flows
and residence times: from bottom-up to topdown approaches, from invasive to non-invasive techniques, from purely physical
characterization to isotopic, biogeochemical and ecological characterization, from point-based to pattern-based observations,
from single basin studies to inter-comparison and classification.
