AB: Surface soil moisture characteristics are varied due to physical factors such as vegetation, soil type, and topography as well as climatologic factors such as precipitation. Soil moisture was measured daily at depth of 0, 5, 10, 15, 25, and 50 cm using dielectric probes during the Soil Moisture Experiment 2005 (SMEX05) near Ames, IA. These measurements are made at three different topographic categories (i.e., hilltop, slope, and valley) in ten fields having a variety of physical conditions. During SMEX05, frequent regional rainfall with significant spatial heterogeneity led to brief drydowns and periods of full saturation. The statistical analyses of the soil moisture are considered with regard to different soil depths, climatologic, and physical factors. The spatial and temporal variability of the soil moisture for the different depths are also presented and considered from field to watershed scale.
