Researchers at the Desert Research Institute and the NASA are conducting research aimed at improving water supply forecasts
in the Truckee River Basin using NASA Earth Science Data Products. The primary goals of this project are: 1) to demonstrate
the use of fractional snow covered area (SCA) observations derived from NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Moderate
Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for analyzing the temporal and spatial distribution of error associated with
modeled SCA; and 2) demonstrate how fractional SCA observations can be used to improve operational streamflow forecasts
derived from PRMS (Precipitation Runoff Modeling System), a USGS precipitation-runoff model. Initial results indicate that
there are substantial differences between spatial and temporal distributions of PRMS simulated SCA and MODIS derived
fractional SCA. When MODIS fractional SCA information is used to adjust model parameters, streamflow simulations are
improved.
