TI: The Spatial Extent and Impacts of Drought

AB: The economic and societal consequences of drought are felt most strongly in the developing nations of the world. Recent research, Lyon (2004), Lyon and Barnston (2005) reveals that the global extent of moderate and extreme droughts in these regions is strongly modulated by the El Ni¤o/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. This paper describes recent research to quantify the relationships of drought to ENSO strength. Research aimed at better defining the definition of drought to reflect the impacts of precipitation deficits at different temporal scales is also discussed.
