TI: Coupling Rainfall Simulation Experiments With Numerical Models to Understand Hillslope-Scale Erosion From Disturbed Landscapes in Southern California

AB: With thin soils, steep slopes, and sparse vegetation, the southern California landscape is particularly sensitive to disturbances that alter hydrological pathways. A series of rainfall simulation experiments was carried out in a watershed near Santa Barbara to investigate how two types of common disturbances, fire in native shrub vegetation and grazing in converted grasslands, affect the distribution of runoff between surface and subsurface flow paths. Observations from the field experiments were used to develop numerical models to predict the erosional response to these disturbances at the hillslope scale.
