CUAHSI and CLEANER are developing a joint science and infrastructure plan aimed at dramatically increasing our understanding
of the nation's water resources. Critical to this understanding is exploring the physical and disciplinary interfaces of
emerging areas such as hydropedology. Research spanning traditional disciplinary boundaries at larger spatial scales than is
common today is an essential component of observatories. As currently envisioned, observatories will collect a multitude of
data pertaining to fundamental properties such as fluxes, flowpaths, residence times, and storages. This approach facilitates
the advancement of synergistic science by providing the integrative platform to target knowledge gaps. Soil-water
interactions across scales are a first order determinant on a number of hydrological processes. For instance, understanding
how different soil types are structured and formed on the landscape could improve our ability to predict flow and transport
through the unsaturated zone.
