Soil is a critical link in the global hydrologic cycle and a natural integrator of various processes in the earth's critical
zone. The earth's critical zone provides an appealing framework for integrated studies of water with soil, rock, air, and
biotic resources in the earth's surface and near-surface environments. With emerging national and international environmental
monitoring networks designed to address big science questions that are increasingly called for by funding agencies and
scientific consortia, the role of soils needs to be considered adequately in many of these environmental monitoring networks.
In particular, a large-scale observing network for the earth's critical zone as a whole is needed. This paper attempts to
present a synthesized and comprehensive view of the soil's role in the science and infrastructure initiatives of the
Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc. (CUAHSI). Based on the 12 vision papers
developed for the CHAUSI for advancing the hydrologic science in the next decade, this paper explores how soil science and
hydrology can advance one another, and suggests effective means of promoting concerted and synergistic efforts from soil
scientists and hydrologists (along with scientists from other related disciplines). Each of the 12 vision papers includes the
soil as an important component and recognizes various roles the soil plays in the hydrologic cycle. It is likely that the
CHAUSI's science agenda can benefit from integrating the earth's critical zone concept and utilizing fully synergistic
contributions from soil science.
