The Willamette Valley of Oregon is the state's most prosperous region in terms of agriculture and timber assets, yet is also
expected to nearly double in population within the next 50 years. These competing interests make it important for land
managers to understand the likely impacts due to land use/land cover (LU/LC) change. In this study, the model SWAT (Soil and
Water Assessment Tool) is used to examine how different development trends in the Southern Willamette Valley may impact the
future generation of stream flow, groundwater recharge, nitrate leaching, and evapotranspiration. SWAT was first calibrated
and validated using recent climatic, LU/LC, and hydrograph data, while the future scenarios were then loaded and evaluated,
using the same initial input data except for LU/LC. The three future LU/LC scenarios examined include high intensity
development, conservation, and projected current trends (all for the year 2050). Relative differences between scenarios and
their degree of change from current conditions are evaluated.
