AB: The Brazilian Center for Weather Prediction and Climate Studies (CPTEC) seeks to improve its global analysis as well as one-day precipitation forecast over South America by assimilating precipitation. As an initial test, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) merged high quality (HQ)/infrared (IR)precipitation estimates, with a 0.25-degree latitude/longitude grid resolution, are now being assimilated in the atmospheric general circulation model. Forecast experiments are mostly carried out during the Southern Hemisphere summertime, where two different assimilation domains are tested. The first assimilation domain extends from -40oS to 40oN. The second one only covers the South American region. The global model also performs a control experiment without precipitation assimilation. Evaluations of the impact on the prognostic variables, such as air temperature, specific humidity, and horizontal wind will be provided based on comparisons with the control experiment, global analyses, and observations. Initial results are promising suggesting that precipitation assimilation may be worthwhile, which may impact future analysis efforts at CPTEC.
