The performance of the operational NOAA/NESDIS Hydro-Estimator (HE) satellite rainfall algorithm over northwestern Mexico was
evaluated for the 2002, 2003, and 2004 monsoons using raingauge observations taken from the North American Monsoon
Experiment (NAME) Event Raingauge Network (NERN). The NERN consists of 87 tipping-bucket raingauges that are situated to
depict terrain-induced precipitation features, and they were installed as part of the NAME program to improve the
understanding and predictability of warm-season precipitation in southwestern North America. The 4-km HE precipitation
estimates are compared with these calibrated raingauge observations to assess whether satellite-based estimates are able to
capture such terrain-induced rainfall characteristics that are convective in origin. The study presents comprehensive error
statistics and confidence level information of the algorithm from the three seasons of study. The validation results are also
used to explore some of the hydrologic impacts on streamflow and/or soil moisture at the event timescale over one basin in
the NAME region.
