TI: The effect of aquitard control on the dispersivity measurement of the aquifer

AB: The Advection Dispersion Equation (ADE) is the most widely used governing equation for solute transport in groundwater system. Dispersivity is an important parameter of an aquifer in terms of risk assessment and contaminant remediation. There are long debates among the hydrologist society on whether a constant dispersivity is enough to describe solute transport in groundwater system. In this paper, we derived analytical solutions for the problem of diverging tracer test. The advantages of our solutions over the previous work in literature are: 1) we took into account of the effect of the aquitard; 2) We considered dispersion both in horizontal and vertical direction; and 3) we solve the ADE by treating the diffusion occurring along the aquifer-aquitard boundary as a boundary condition, instead of as a volumetric source/sink term. Based on the solutions, we suggest that the effect of the aquitard control on the solute transport in the aquifer system can explain the so-called scale dependent dispersivity problem with a simple dispersivity constant.
