AB: Theories of dispersion are based on spatial averaging and closure, both of which can be accomplished by more than one method. In the method of volume averaging, spatial averaging and closure are straightforward processes when the characteristic length scales are disparate. Most real systems are hierarchical in nature and possess disparate length scales, thus averaging and closure can be carried out more than once in order to obtain useful results. In this presentation, some of the early explorations of averaging are discussed for both homogeneous and heterogeneous porous media. Two key problems for future research are the measurement of the structural parameters of a porous medium and a theory for predicting how these parameters will influence the dispersion process. Some ideas are presented in terms of the filters that appear in the method of volume averaging.
