Under NASA STTR sponsorship, Vexcel Corporation in Boulder Colorado is collaborating with Penn State University on a Wireless
Sensor Network program designed to acquire high-frequency active and passive seismic data in harsh environments, notably
temperate glaciers in Alaska and on Antarctic ice streams. This work has led to further collaboration with the University of
Alaska Southeast in other applications of wireless sensors to remote data acquisition, particularly mammalian and marine
bioacoustic recording, hazard monitoring, and education-outreach. A significant engineering challenge in returning data from
unattended sensors is overcoming the inherent cost-data tradeoff. One approach in meeting this challenge is to take advantage
of advances in relevant technologies: Wireless telemetry, low-cost low-power computers, GPS electronics, instrumentation,
and environmental hardening. A second approach is to build intelligent data handling into the network operational software,
an approach we intend to promote through the Open Source paradigm. We discuss two important aspects of the resulting design
and integration problem: Reducing power consumption and data recovery strategies. We describe the project status and
direction based on results from prototype deployments in the Colorado Front Range, the environment around Juneau Alaska, and
on the tidewater Columbia Glacier in Southcentral Alaska.
