AB: LOOKING is a research effort to identify, synthesize, and assemble existing and emerging concepts and technologies into a coherent, viable cyberinfrastructure design to federate ocean observatories into an integrated knowledge grid. The primary objective is to provide to the Ocean Research and Interactive Ocean Networks (ORION) an initial operational capability plan for the initial ORION installations. There are four areas of activities being pursued: 1) a federated ocean observatory system architecture, 2) a high definition interactive instrument cluster, 3) an ocean observatory workbench, and 4) ocean observatory services. In a federated network we are seeking to expand the application of physical observatories from the use by one community to the use by many independent, diverse communities of scientists. Furthermore, we seek to shift the emphasis from retrospective inquiry into archived data for the purpose of characterizing what has been observed to continuous real-time inquiry for the purpose of responding to what is being observed. In 2) we are pursing command and control of a cluster of instruments for a single purpose - two examples include a high bandwidth and high resolution ocean telepresence and detecting, tracking, and classifying events in real time HD video streams. The workbench in 3) will demonstrate the value of scientific workflow systems in the context of ocean observatories using Grid-based approaches to distributed computation. 4) will develop essential middleware to facilitate and enable instrument and infrastructure control, data generation and distributed storage, data assimilation and ocean simulation, analysis, visualization and collaboration. Examples from each of these research areas will be discussed.
