AB: The NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory is developing a tsunami forecasting system known as SIFT (Short-term Inundation Forecasting for Tsunamis) to provide real-time estimates of tsunami propagation and inundation for National Weather Service Tsunami Warning Centers. Direct tsunami observations from deep-ocean pressure recorders are combined with a database of pre-computed model scenarios to produce offshore and site-specific tsunami amplitudes. The system combines non-linear numerical models with modular Java/Jini technology to produce a series of forecast tools displayed in a graphical user interface. SIFT will help the Tsunami Warning Centers provide timely and accurate warning guidance to emergency managers and at-risk populations.
