AB: The NSF-funded GEON (Geosciences Network) Information Technology Research project is developing data sharing frameworks, a registry for distributed databases, concept-based search mechanisms, advanced visualization software, and grid-computing resources for earth science and education applications. The goal of this project is to enable new interdisciplinary research in the geosciences, while extending the access to data and complex modeling tools from the hands of a few researchers to a much broader set of scientific and educational users. To facilitate this, the GEON team of IT scientists, geoscientists, and educators and their collaborators are creating a capable Cyberinfrastructure that is based on grid/web services operating in a distributed environment. We are using a best practices approach that is designed to provide useful and usable capabilities and tools. With the realization of new large scale projects such as EarthScope that involve the collection, analysis, and modeling of vast quantities of diverse data, it is increasingly important to be able to effectively handle, model, and integrate a wide range of multi-dimensional, multi-parameter, and time dependent data in a timely fashion. GEON has been developing a process where the user can discover, access, retrieve and visualize data that is hosted either at GEON or at distributed servers. Whenever possible, GEON is using established protocols and formats for data and metadata exchange that are based on community efforts such as OPeNDAP, the Open GIS Consortium, Grid Computing, and digital libraries. This approach is essential to help overcome the challenges of dealing with heterogeneous distributed data and increases the possibility of data interoperability. We give an overview of resources that are now available to access and visualize a variety of geological and geophysical data, derived products and models including GPS data, GPS-derived velocity vectors and strain rates, earthquakes, three-dimensional seismic tomography, geodynamic models, geologic maps and remote sensing imagery.
