TI: Increasing Access and Usability of Remotely Sensed Data: The U.S. Geological Survey/NASA EarthLook Tool

AB: Although Earth Science remotely sensed data are now widely available, much at low or no cost, less sophisticated and potential users often do not have the expertise or tools to view or analyze them, effectively blocking access to remote sensing data by a large community. The proposed EarthLook web-based tool increases access to remote sensing data by allowing a user to create a customized collection of satellite images. The archive to assemble the collection will contain Landsat and ASTER satellite images. It will be accessed using a map-based image-finding tool that displays the thumbnails and locations of scenes. The user can locate his/her area and images of interest by zooming in, then display the image or information about the area. A set of simple visualization and analysis tools also will be provided so the user can explore the data and employ the tools to assist in analysis of their area. Capabilities include pan, zoom, vector overlay display, image annotation, and distance and area measurement. The combined image+tools package will require only a Windows-based computer and basic computer skills, and will be delivered via ftp or on hard media. Because the targeted users generally have little experience with remote sensing, simplicity is an overarching principle. The Web-based version will be operated and maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey EROS Data Center. We will demonstrate the use of the EarthLook tool using a collection of satellite scenes covering UNESCO Heritage conservation sites.
