We have established several Web Map Services (WMS) that
provide visualizations of numerical weather model data and
satellite observations in support of NASA's Modeling,
Analysis and Prediction Program 2005 Intensive Analysis
(MAP05) Hurricane Project. The primary data component
offered is the voluminous output (30GB/day) from the
fourth-generation Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS4)
incorporating the finite-volume General Circulation Model
(fvGCM). In addition, cloud imagery from the NASA MODIS and NOAA GOES
sensors, and other ancillary datasets, are provided. We will
discuss and demonstrate these servers using a simple
web-based client.
WMS is a web service interoperability specification
developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and also
approved for release as an International Standard (ISO
19128). WMS allows the user to request customized images of
geospatial information, selecting exactly the dataset(s),
times, geographic area and output size desired. A WMS client
can combine output from multiple WMS servers, thus producing
a unified view of information stored in a distributed
network.
Adoption of web services for access to hurricane data can be
more efficient than older methods of data access.
Specifically, instead of downloading huge datasets to a
local workstation for analysis, the data can be stored on a
remote server that generates visualizations of user-selected
subsets of the data. In addition, a "clip-and-ship"
capability can allow the user to visually inspect the data
via WMS and then request numeric data values for only the
subset of interest.
