AB: NASA's Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) has been collaborating and exchanging science data and services metadata with many U.S. and international partners for several years. These exchanges were primarily manual and extremely time consuming. These exchange methods are no longer practical, because the volume of accessible metadata increases significantly each year. Furthermore, the growing number of accessible metadata repositories has demonstrated the need for a standardized protocol to simplify the harvesting task. The Open Archives Initiative answered the call with the PMH. The Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (PMH), developed through the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) community is making headway in reducing many barriers to the exchange of metadata. By providing a standardized protocol for retrieving metadata from a networked server, it is possible to harvest metadata content without needing to know the server's databases architecture. Streamlining the harvesting process is critical because it will reduce the time it takes for data producers to deliver their metadata to accessible directories. By using a harvester client capable of issuing OAI-PMH queries to an OAI-PMH server, all or portions of an external metadata database can be retrieved in a fast and efficient manner. The GCMD has developed an OAI-PMH compliant metadata harvester client for interoperating with several of its partners. The harvester client and server will be demonstrated. Testing and operational difficulties experienced in this process will also be discussed, along with current partnerships.
