AB: We describe architectural and semantic issues encountered and resolved while developing a Sensor Planning Service in the context of the Open Geospatial Consortium (tm) OGC Web Services Initiative, Phase 3 (OWS-3). One of the challenges of defining a sensor planning and tasking service is specifying the broad array of instruments it is intended to control, while presenting vocabularies relevant to any of the great number of disciplines that could benefit from the use of such a service. This presentation describes the means by which a mapping from the diverse universe of device control and automated measurement to the constructs used by specialized information communities can be mediated by standards-based machine-to-machine communication.
