AB: We investigate the shear strengths of silica glass, alpha-quartz, coesite, and stishovite using classical molecular dynamics simulations with a modified van Beest-Kramer-van Santen potential. Shear strengths along different crystallographic orientations are studied. We also explore the effects of hydrostatic pressure, temperature, and defects on the shear strength. *Work partly performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy under contract No. W-7405-ENG-36 and NNSA Cooperative Agreement DE-FC88-01NV14049
