TI: Eigenpattern analysis for the Iberian Peninsula

AB: The Karhunen-Loeve expansion (KLE) is a technique in which a dynamical system is decomposed into a complete set of linearized, orthonormal eigenvectors. These basis functions are the orthonormal decomposition of the patterns that are the physical expression of the underlying dynamics of the system. The KLE is applied to the Iberian Peninsula case, with different spatial resolutions. A strong correlation is found for a box size of 2°, but not for smaller boxes. With 2°, each eigenmode is related to the different fault interactions, from higher to increasingly local areas. This resolution is also the best found for a cellular automaton (CA) model of the pattern dynamics.
