AB: Avalanching systems are usually studied in the steady state regime in the conditions of weak driving. However, such system may experience large short-time external disturbances moving it from this state. This may happen, for example, in the current sheet of the Earth magnetotail when strongly perturbed by the solar wind during large magnetic storms events. We study the effects of such sudden strong perturbations within the burning model, proposed as a model for the localized reconnection in the current sheet. Particular attention is paid to the avalanches in the transient regime and relaxation to the steady state after the disturbance is over.
