AB: There are a wide variety of Alfven stationary waves that have been identified. A number of these are solutions of the Derivative Nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation which is appropriate for the case of weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive waves in the absence of dissipation. The one studied here is known as the one-parameter soliton and corresponds to wave travel nearly parallel to the ambient magnetic field. The stability of this soliton to a transverse perturbation is studied using a linear analysis following Ruderman. The results, however, differ from those of Ruderman. The cause and meaning of these differences will be reported.
