The lithosphere of North Germany, Denmark and South Sweden contains the transition zone between the Baltic Shield to the
northeast and the younger European lithosphere to the southwest, known as the Tornquist Zone. The area has been subject to
several teleseismic tomographic studies in order to image this transition zone, but these studies disagree on where the
transition is located. We present tomographic results from a Monte Carlo inversion of relative P-phase travel times from 48
teleseismic earthquakes measured across the transition zone on 120 seismometers during the TOR project. The result of the
method is 1400 tomographic models that all fit the observations. A priori information that force the model parameters to
belong to one of two possible lithopheric types has been applied to the inversion. This approach emphasizes the transition
zone and gives by probabilities the affiliation of the model parameters the two lithopheric types. Our results show that the
transition zone between the Baltic Shield and the younger European lithosphere is dipping to the northeast and has a width of
around 100 km.
