Recent in situ and remotely-sensed observations have revealed an unanticipated richness in both the spatial and temporal
variability of the Indonesian Throughflow region over a vast range of time scales, from tidal to intraseasonal to
interannual. This variability is related to the complex interaction between forcing from the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and
that locally driven within the Indonesian region. The talk will review the variability of the mass and property fluxes over
all these time scales as seen in the observations. Highlights will be drawn from recent direct measurements of velocity,
temperature and salinity from an 18-month mooring array, deployed as part of the first fieldwork phase of the International
Nusantara Stratification and Transport (INSTANT) program within the inflow and outflow passages of the Indonesian Throughflow
region.
