AB: The large-scale response of the Indo-Pacific Ocean to atmospheric forcing associated with the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is examined using an ocean general circulation model forced by canonical MJO conditions constructed from observations. These results were examined to determine the ocean response to the MJO regarding the degree ocean advection processes versus surface heat flux plays a role in the surface heat budget, the manner the intraseasonal time scale can rectify onto longer-time scale variability, the type of wave and sea level activity that makes up the ocean response, and the sensitivity of the above results to the seasonal modulation of the MJO. In addition, the results illustrate the impact on the modeled Indonesian Throughflow (ITF). For example, the variations in the ITF brought about by MJO wind stress forcing are of the same order as the magnitude of the seasonal cycle of ITF transport (~1 PW; 10 Sv). These results and their seasonal modulation will be discussed, as well as their implications and caveats, the caveats associated with the model and forcing framework, and the areas necessitating further study.
