A recently discovered system of shallow marine hydrothermal vents from the fjord Eyjafjördur in Iceland is described. The
vent system is located north of Arnarnes, a small spit on the west side of the fjord.
The system is comprised of several hydrothermal chimneys or clay-stacks forming a 500 m long line trending approximately
north-south. Depth to the surrounding sea-floor is close to 25 m at the south end, extending to over 50 m at the north end.
Individual chimneys or clay-stacks rise up to 10 m above the seafloor. The chimneys are comprised of poorly crystalline clay
resulting from precipitation reactions involving mixing of hot fresh hydrothermal fluid and cold seawater. In addition to
focused discharge associated with the clay-stacks, pervasive flow through bottom sediment has been observed.The micro- and
macro-biology of the area is now also under investigation.
Maximum temperatures of fluids discharging from the vents measured to date is 77°C. Chemistry of fluid-samples recovered
from the vents may be modeled as a fresh hydrothermal fluid, contaminated with less than 1% of ambient seawater.
