AB: SeaWiFS 5-day mean aerosol optical thickness and chlorophyll-a anomaly estimates are examined for 1998 - May 2005. The correlation of contemporaneous values is difficult to interpret because of possible cross-contamination in the estimates and, instead, aerosol is correlated with the tendency in chlorophyll-a (centered difference) to examine the portion of the signal that is not contaminated. The analysis captures modest positive correlations over broad regions of the subtropical oceans and is not restricted to upwelling zones. Time series will be shown to document this covariability.
