AB: The Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on NPP and NPOESS will provide the basis of the measurement of sea-surface temperature (SST) by spaceborne infrared radiometry into the foreseeable future, extending the time series of such measurements begun by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the MODerate-resolution Imaging Radiometer (MODIS). While the primary objectives of the NPOESS mission are related to operational applications, the prospect of the continuation of the time series of accurate SSTs is of critical relevance for climate monitoring and research. This imposes strict requirements on the absolute accuracy, and knowledge of the error characteristics of the retrieved fields. The NPOESS era ushers in new ambitions, including the measurement of air-sea heat flux from satellites. We will present the scientific basis of the algorithms under development to achieve the NPOESS goals with VIIRS measurements, and discuss the likely residual uncertainties in the retrieved fields.
