Estimation of real-time basin-scale images of primary production is required to understand changes in natural removal
mechanism of atmospheric CO2 by the ocean. Approximately half of the plant production occurs in the oceans, therefore, it has
significant role on carbon cycling on the earth surface. The measured photic zone integrated primary production by 14C
tracer technique showed significant positive relation with surface chlorophyll a and negative relation with sea surface
temperature (SST) during all seasons in the World Oceans. The slope of the relation between surface chlorophyll a and photic
zone production is not significantly different in the equatorial and temperate regions in the World Oceans. Relatively these
slopes are different in the subtropical and subpolar regions where photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) showed strong
relation with photic zone production. Based on these relationships, multiple regression equations were developed for the
construction of photic zone integrated production using monthly mean PAR, surface chlorophyll a from Sea-viewing Wide Field
of view Sensor and SST from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer. We present here spatial and seasonal variations in
global primary production and comparison with existing models.
