Recent theoretical models of the large scale Jovian dynamics (Southwood and Kivelson, 2001; Cowley and Bunce, 2003) predict
that brightenings (conversely, dimmings) of the main auroral oval should be associated with episodes of low (high) pressure
solar wind and magnetosphere expansions (compressions). Remote sensing of auroral emissions from Jupiter, on the contrary,
indicate a positive correlation between the global auroral activity and the solar wind pressure (e.g. Gurnett et al., 2002).
In this study, we will focus on the variability of the main oval structure and brightness from the HST archive data, and use
an MHD model to extrapolate the solar wind measured at Earth out to Jupiter at the period of the observations. These two sets
of results will be compared whenever possible.
