Evidence from Coburn Lake, in the northern Sierra Nevada, suggests that unusually high occurrences of charcoal and increases
in magnetic susceptibility correspond to periods of abrupt climate change that occurred 8,200 cal yrs BP and at other times
during the Holocene. An explanation is offered that abrupt climate change can result in the death of existing vegetation
followed by massive slope erosion. These changes in climate, vegetation and disturbance regimes might then be detected in
the sediment record as increases in sediment and charcoal at and following these severe climatic events.
