AB: One high resolution sediment core (MD99-2294) from the Nordic Seas has been investigated for paleoceanographic proxies. This includes planktonic foraminifera, stable oxygen and carbon isotopes measured on planktonic and benthic foraminifera, and ice rafted debris (IRD). Our focus has been on the paleoceanography and glacial history in the area during the early and middle Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), 25-19 cal. ka. MD99-2294 is situated at the continental slope off the Lofoten islands, Northern Norway, penetrating the Lofoten Contourite Drift (68.18'97N, 10.30'45E) at 1122 m water depth, picturing variations in the influx of Atlantic Water. Sedimentation rates ranged from 60 cm/ka to 250 cm/ka during the investigated period. These comparatively high sedimentation rates may explain why bioturbation is less pronounced in slope drift sediments.From 25-21 cal. ka most proxies show a gradual change towards enhanced glacial conditions. This is mirrored by increase in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma sinistral and heavier benthic and planktonic d18O values. Benthic d13C is stable through this period. However around 21.5 cal. ka a rapid depletion in d13C occurs. Furthermore, IRD and foraminiferal fluxes show periods with low values interpreted as periods with permanent sea ice cover. Superimposed on this trend are centennial fluctuations in all proxies indicating cold but variable conditions during LGM.
