AB: New sedimentological results are presented from Sagfjorden, a `tributary' fjord of Vestfjorden in northern Norway. The 0.5m box core, JM03-497 (67o 58'17N, 15o 21.73'E), was recovered from 547 m water depth. Pb210 dating of the core indicates upper sediments have a very high temporal resolution of ca. 7yrs/cm. This is the first record of such high resolution from this area. Recent Holocene bottom water conditions are inferred from down-core analysis of benthic stable isotopes, faunal assemblages and lithology. d18O measurements on the benthic foraminifera C. teretis record the regional changes within the sedimentary and climatic environments. Preliminary results from foraminiferal faunal counts are also presented. These will enable the identification of the marked climatic events such as the `Medieval Warm Period' and the onset of the `Little Ice Age'. Temporal comparisons can then be made with other marine sedimentary archives from northern Norway (Mikalsen et al., 2001) and the Barents Sea. The sea ice zone (SIZ) reflects interactions between the sea-ice, atmospheric and oceanic systems. Reconstructions of sea ice fluctuations in the Barents Sea (1580-2002) by Vinje are based upon historical records and satellite observations (1999, 2001). The study shows a decrease in the expansion of the sea ice southward from 1830. Holocene temperature series from a proxy record from the Malangen fjord (69o29.9'N and 18o23.6'E) and the instrumental Kola Profile from the W. Barents Sea (70o30'N to 72o30'N along the 33o30'E meridian) show a general, increasing, temperature trend over the last 100 years. Both records correlate well with the Vinje data over this time period. In addition, comparisons are made to instrumental atmospheric temperature measurements and the marine sediment core JM03-497. In order to extend our knowledge of sea ice fluctuations through the last millennia a sea ice transfer function is being developed based upon modern benthic foraminifera from the Barents Sea. A recently recovered marine sediment core from east of Bear Island provides a proxy record for climatic variability in the W. Barents Sea over the last 1000 years; the transfer function will subsequently be applied to this data. This study will therefore provide important information on patterns of past climate change and the response of the SIZ to these fluctuations.
