Basic paleolimnological research traditionally has been a relatively low-cost, independent endeavor. As equipment has
improved and techniques have been developed, the goals of such projects have become more aggressive, and their scientific
potential far greater. However, the necessary field and analytical equipment, and storage space for ever-increasing sample
volumes require significant financial resources and large facilities. Shared/public assets for core retrieval, analysis and
archiving reduce costs for individual researchers while increasing the quality and quantity of work on the cores. The LRC
LacCore Facility is an open laboratory operating with funds from NSF and the University of Minnesota. The Facility is
dedicated to providing free or low-cost support in the form of expertise, instrumentation, and equipment for the collection
and study of lake sediment cores in service to the global paleolimnological community. This mandate makes it possible for
researchers at all sizes and types of institutions to use the best techniques available in processing their cores. Recent
additions to our equipment allow for whole-core, high-resolution digital imaging and automated multiparameter core logging to
be performed routinely, all at no cost. As an outgrowth of user demands and technical discussions, Facility staff develop
and then disseminate new or improved analytical protocols and other resources to the larger community. The Core Repository
archives several thousand meters of high quality sediment cores from large and small expeditions to lakes around the world.
Researchers at any institution may submit requests for samples from these cores, or accession their own cores to the
Repository for permanent storage and curation.
