The adoption of uniform protocols for basic characterization of sedimentary components and sample curation facilitates
multiproxy analytical approaches to paleolimnological studies. Multisensor automated core logging, high-resolution imaging,
and macro- and microscopic identification of sedimentary structure and composition provide the basis for all future sediment
analyses. These fundamental core descriptions also allow other researchers to assess rapidly the potential for studies beyond
the scope of the original project; proper core curation assures the maximum scientific benefit is obtained from the initial
investment required to retrieve sediment cores. The Limnological Research Center (LRC) has developed a Core Facility (Core
Laboratory and National Lacustrine Core Repository) that supports paleolimnological efforts at all scales with
instrumentation and accumulated expertise for basic core description and curation. With support from NSF and the University
of Minnesota, the Facility provides these services to researchers visiting from any institution at minimal cost or free of
charge. The Repository now curates several thousand meters of core from lakes around the world, both from the Global Lake
Drilling (GLAD) Projects and from smaller-scale expeditions. These cores and the open sample distribution policy assist the
community in building a global network of continental paleoenvironmental records.
