AB: Ice core studies have shown that mineral dust deposited during glacial periods on the East Antarctic Plateau originated in Patagonia. The provenance of dust deposited on the other regions of the Antarctic continent remains unknown, and the dataset for interglacials such as the present Holocene, is extremely limited. In order to investigate the dust provenance at present in the Atlantic sector of coastal Antarctica, mineral particles were extracted from recent snow deposits on Berkner Island (79°34`S, 045°39`W; altitude: 899 m) in the Ronne Ice Shelf. About two years of snow+dust deposits were sampled at a <2 months resolution. Mineral dust was then analyzed for Sr and Nd isotopic composition. Preliminary results show that the isotopic composition of the dust, and therefore its provenance, vary temporally. These data, which are the first to document dust provenance outside the East Antarctic Plateau, show that although Patagonia might provide some of the dust on Berkner Island at present, at least one additional source is likely to play a role.
