Large-scale changes in the Earth's climate throughout the Quaternary have accompanied changes in the emission, atmospheric
transport, and deposition of dust-derived iron (Fe). During recent centuries, climate change, changes in land use, and
industrial activities have altered the natural variability and chemistry of atmospheric Fe and related aquatic and
terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. Recent modeling studies suggest significant declines in atmospheric Fe deposition to high
latitudes over the past 30 years. To investigate changes in the atmospheric flux of Fe to the Arctic we have developed
several continuous high-temporal resolution records of Fe from Greenland ice cores spanning the past 100 years. These records
suggest a decrease in the Fe flux to central Greenland from the 1970s to present, but also suggest that the flux increased
in Southern Greenland over the same time period. These changes are likely due to temporal variability in both dust
mobilization and atmospheric transport to the sites and the spatial variability of atmospheric transport to different regions
of the Greenland ice cap.
