AB: Ice cores provide a record of geologic and climate history through the accumulation of layers of material. Resolving annual variability in ice cores is essential for reconstructing geochemical variations correlated to climate change. A nondestructive technique that allows for spatial resolution corresponding to sub-annual temporal resolution has been developed on the x-ray fluorescence microprobe, beamline 10.3.1 at the Advanced Light Source, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The spatial resolution, which is limited by the cross sectional thickness the incident photon beam, is easily adjusted from 50 microns up to 1 millimeter. The high photon flux of the synchrotron allows for rapid analysis, less than 30 seconds per location. Previous analyses of standard reference materials have demonstrated linear calibration over three orders of concentration magnitude for several metals including; Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn. The technique has proven applicable for both bay ocean sediment cores and has recently been adapted to analyze GISP II core sections, courtesy of the National Ice Core Laboratory. The ice core being analyzed has an existing record of high resolution laser light scattering to permit comparison between elemental detection and dust particle scattering.
