Here we present a tropical sea surface temperature (SST) record derived from Sr/Ca in a coral from Gizo Island, New Georgia.
These results from the last century show a decoupling of the relationship between Sr/Ca and SST, a feature that we suggest
may be more wide spread than often acknowledged. At Gizo Island, the decoupling of Sr/SST may reflect changes in the balance
of subtropical and equatorial water masses at the site due to shifts of South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ). As other
sites, the explanation is not as clear. To better understand this breakdown, we generated correlation maps between pacific
tropical coral geochemical proxies and SST in the Pacific Basin over the last century. Most of the seasonal geochemical data
are dominated by the hemispheric changes in the seasonal cycle of irradiation. ENSO and PDO patterns only emerge in annual
averaged reconstruction. We also find remote correlations sometimes exceeding those at the site of the coral. These results
suggest some type of frequency dependent geochemical response to changing temperature.
