It is well established that global ice volume varies at orbital timescales. The primary evidence of this comes from the
marine oxygen isotope record and U/Th dating of coral terraces. Considerable improvement continues to be made in analytical
techniques for measuring U-series isotopes, and the body of U-series coral data has grown at an ever-increasing pace.
However, progress on the coral record of sea level has been seriously impeded by the open-system behavior of U-series
nuclides in corals.
Here, a sea-level curve for the last two glacial-interglacial cycles is constructed using a new approach to coral dating that
corrects ages for the well-documented age bias introduced by open-system behavior. In addition to the expected ice volume
variability related to changes in the Earth's orbit, this record resolves higher-frequency sea-level cycles that occur over a
few thousand years. This sub-orbital period ice volume change is also apparent in salinity records and marine oxygen
isotope records.
